Cardboard Castle handmade gifts made from remnants of the Ephemeral Empire
2012 tour, Self-published Book TBA 2013
Shoshanna Utchenik, an American artist in Slovenia, interprets live public exchanges into a visual, poetic book exploring identity politics.
"I believe peace is rooted in individual self-awareness and compassion for others. The Becoming Slovenian project uses specific moments of culture clash, humor, and beauty to open up big questions and consciousness about the human condition, and how connected we all are. Sometimes the smallest everyday exchange shifts reality imperceptibly in a new direction, toward a world we hadn't yet imagined." READ MORE HERE

The Cardboard Castle Project is a series of quick, down and dirty community collaborations that construct temporary architectural sculptures out of cardboard, playfully exploring how private versus public spaces affect our relationships to each other. The project creates space for dialogue about our personal conceptions of ‘home’ as they may or may not relate to attachment, impermanence, and the American Dream.

Since I've started the Cardboard Castle project, recent media frenzy over Caine's Arcade and the nostalgia it sparked speak to our universal drive to create our own spaces and define our world, at every age. Watch the internet sensation, grown out of a little boy granted the time and space to 'do nothing,' with 'nothing,' usually so taboo in today's parenting culture... watch here.

•KAPSULA gallery, Ljublana Slovenia
Collaborators Diane Christiansen and Shoshanna Utchenik expanded the small gallery into a fantastical landscape, metaphoric for the activity of the mind. Viewers were invited into a meditative garden, collaged with notes and drawings from the transatlantic correspondence between two artists navigating motherhood, marriage, careers, mortality and spirituality. Also on view was animation by Christiansen, Shelly Dodson and Matt Marsden, with sound by Steve Dawson.

Becoming Slovenian Performance/Artist Residency
Shoshanna Utchenik, an American married to a Slovene, began assembling a subjective guide to her own assimilation. She moved her studio to the KAPSULA gallery for the duration of the exhibition, to ask the public:
What must I do to become Slovenian?
Viewers were invited to bring instructive objects as well as ideas to the ongoing performance.
